Rollout of electronic ID cards to begin next week: Afghan VP
Rollout of electronic identification cards will begin in Afghanistan next week, Vice-President Sarwar Danish said on Sunday.

The biometrically secure ID card is expected to aid fairer and more transparent elections in future. The program was planned years ago, but its rollout faced repeated delays over disagreement on the content of the card.

A week ago, a joint parliamentary committee approved president’s decree on changes to Population Registration Act, paving the way for launch of the program.

Based on the changes, the cards shall include nationality, ethnicity and religion.

Following the move, the head of e-ID authority said that the authority would begin rollout of the cards in the next few days with President Ashraf Ghani being as first receiver
