The Salang Highway -- linking the capital Kabul with northern Afghanistan -- was reopened for light traffic on Tuesday, an official said.

AVA- Lt. Gen. Mohammad Rajab, the highway maintenance commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News the road had been cleared of heavy snow and avalanches after hectic efforts.
Apart from a snowfall of 170 centimetres, 15 avalanches also hit the highway, but the maintenance team cleared the road for light traffic at around 10pm on Monday night.
In the winter, travelling the highway is dangerous due to heavy snow and harsh cold weather. Several fatal incidents have occurred in the tunnel in recent years.
