Political Parties Call for Change of Electoral System
A number of political parties, observing and civil society institutions have urged the government to change the electoral system and announce the elections date.
AVA- They stressed that there is no alternative for election and the exact date of parliamentary election should be announced as soon as possible.
According to the Independent Election Commission (IEC) statistics, the political parties and monitoring institutions have submitted nearly 61 proposal for the commission.
Meanwhile, IEC noted to review the proposals and take actions.
“We will work on them to see which one is possible and which one is not,” said Rafiullah Bidar, a member of IEC.
Parliamentary elections were scheduled to be held in Afghanistan on 15 October 2016, to elect members of the House of the People, but were postponed to 7 July 2018.
Much of the prelude to the election has focused on the debate over reforming Afghanistan’s electoral laws. The current system is one of single non-transferable vote.
The announcement comes two years after the date on which a new parliament was legally supposed to start work, on July 6, 2015.
