Putin boasts of new nukes that can strike anywhere in the world
Russia has developed an array of new defense systems — including a supersonic nuclear weapon that can reach any spot on Earth while avoiding missile-defense systems, President Vladimir Putin announced Thursday.
Delivering his annual State of the Union address, Putin said Russia was prepared to use its nukes if attacked, and added that Moscow would consider a nuclear attack on its allies as a nuclear attack on Russia itself — and would retaliate immediately.
“We see increased opportunities with the armed forces,” he said, according to CNBC. “We’ve done a lot to strengthen our army and navy and they are equipped with modern weaponry.”
Putin presented a video of how one of the prototype missiles would work, explaining that the new system would have an unlimited range.
“It can attack any target, through the North or South Pole, it is a powerful weapon and no missile defense system will be able to withstand,” the strongman boasted.
Putin also revealed that Russia has a “small nuclear power energy system” — a nuclear warhead — that can be deployed on a cruise missile system and “avoid all interceptors.”
He said the country had successfully tested the cruise last year and would start manufacturing it now.

“This is unheard of and nobody else has such a system in the world.” He said. “They might create something like this in the future but by then our guys will have created something new as well.”
He said the new weapons make NATO’s American-led missile defense “useless” — and means an effective end to what he described as Western efforts to block Russia’s development.
The Russian leader also announced a high-speed underwater drone with an “intercontinental” range that can carry a nuclear warhead and could target both aircraft carriers and coastal facilities.
He said its operational depth and high speed would make it immune to interception.
“I want to tell all those who have fueled the arms race over the last 15 years, sought to win unilateral advantages over Russia, introduced unlawful sanctions aimed to contain our country’s development: all what you wanted to impede with your policies have already happened,” he said. “You have failed to contain Russia.”
Putin — who is set to easily win another six-year term in the March 18 election — emphasized that the development of new weapons came in response to the US withdrawal from a Cold war-era treaty banning missile defenses and US efforts to develop a missile defense system.
He said that Washington has ignored Russian complaints.
“No one has listened to us,” he said. “You listen to us now.”
