Sweden pledges $1.2 billion in aid to Afghanistan
Sweden reaffirmed it’s long term financial assistance to Afghanistan by pledging $1.2 billion in aid to Afghanistan which would be spent over the next decade in various sectors.

Jonas Westerland, Sweden’s senior civilian representative in northern Afghanistan said that the funds will be spent over the next decade to improve education, private sector, democracy, gender equality and human rights.

Mr. Westerland further added that half of the funds would be spent by the government of Afghanistan while the remaining funds would be spent through Swedish non-governmental organizations in Afghanistan.

While speaking during a press conference in northern Shebarghan province of Afghanistan, Westerland said the fund will cover projects in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan.

He said the projects which have been prepared by the government of Sweden, will be executed in 2015 and will be completed by 2025.

Sweden is among the major donors for the reconstruction of Afghanistan. Sweden announced in August last year to increase it’s aid to Afghanistan to $130 million a year, from $92.3 million.

Sweden also contributed troops to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan, and pledged to keep around 200 troops in Afghanistan after majority of the NATO combat troops leave the country by the end of 2014.
