U.S. Embassy Condemns Attack Against Abdullah Abdullah
The United States embassy in Kabul condemned the attack by militants against the presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.
Taliban militants group claimed responsibility behind the attack which took place late Wednesday on Kabul-Jalalabad highway.
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah was returning from an election from eastern Jalalabad city of Afghanistan when a group of the Taliban militants ambushed his vehicles convoy.
U.S. embassy in Kabul, following a statement, said, “The U.S. Embassy condemns today’s attack against presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah.”
The statement further added, “Violence has no place in Afghanistan’s developing democracy. We commend the Afghan people for their commitment to a peaceful transition of power in the upcoming election and we reiterate our support for a stable, prosperous and unified Afghanistan.”
This was the third attack by gunmen against Dr. Abdullah Abdullah’s campaign in less than a month.
Unknown gunmen killed two members of Dr. Abdullah’s campaign team in western Herat province of Afghanistan earlier this month, while another tribal elder who was also believed to campaign for Dr. Abdullah Abdullah was shot dead by unknown gunmen a week after his two campaigners were killed.
Zabiullah Mujahid, Taliban group spokesman, said Taliban fighters ambushed the convoy of Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in Sorobi district.
Mujahid claimed that three security guards of Dr. Abdullah were killed and several others were injured following the attack.
