Afghanistan: US Troops In 500lb Bomb Near Miss
US troops in Afghanistan had a near miss when a 500lb bomb was dropped yards from them - allegedly by comrades who mistook their position for the enemy.

Helmet camera footage appears to show soldiers preparing for an airstrike called in to target Taliban fighters spotted on a distant ridge.

The three-and-a-half minute video opens with the sound of radio chatter and soldiers talking about the incoming strike.

Moments after one says "here we go", an aircraft can be heard roaring overhead before the boom of the bomb's impact sends the troops diving to the floor.

A number of expletives can be heard as the shocked soldiers check on their comrades.

A second video appears to show the moment the bomb hit the hillside
"We almost died", says one.

A second video of the incident, apparently filmed from some distance, shows a huge blast and smoke rising from the soldiers' hillside position.

The US Military Times website said some of the soldiers appeared to be wearing the 1st Infantry Division patch.

It was not immediately clear where or when the incident happened, but veterans' website funker 530.com, which posted the video online, said it was filmed in Paktika province in 2013.

The website, which posted comments it claimed were from one of the soldiers, said there were no casualties in the incident.

In the interview, the soldier said the huge bomb landed 15m away and shrapnel from the blast ripped holes in weaponry stored in a wooden hut.

The soldier said: "About a half second before impact you could hear the bomb screaming in like I hadn’t ever heard before, and I definitely knew at that point something was off.

"After the initial realisation that it had hit behind us, we were so scatter-brained trying to figure out what happened.

"It hit so close to the guys in the tower it actually knocked the fill out of radios."

The soldier credited his First Sergeant with saving three lives of comrades who would have been in the wooden building that bore the brunt of shrapnel from the blast.

The soldier said: "If it hadn’t been for the decision of the First Sergeant to bring everyone to 'stand to', three of our guys would have died in that wood building."

The US military has not commented on the video.
