Afghan doctors strike over alleged assault by Herat mayor
Doctors in the western Afghan city of Herat have launched a strike over the alleged beating of a pediatrician by the city's mayor and the mayor's son.

Doctors at Herat's state-owned provincial hospital are demanding that Herat Mayor Mohammad Salim Taraki and his son be arrested. The doctors also blocked a highway near the hospital on February 25.

The doctors say pediatrician Mirwais Atai was beaten on February 22 after Atai told a female member of Taraki's family to wait her turn for her child to be vaccinated.

The woman had allegedly demanded that the doctor vaccinate the child immediately.

Taraki and his son are accused of attacking the doctor at the hospital before abducting him and taking him to the mayor's house, where they allegedly beat him again. Taraki has not commented on the allegations.(Rferl)
