AVA- Woelsi Jirga member from western Herat province, Saleh Mohammad Saljuqi, said about 800 Afghans had been imprisoned in Iran were transferred to Herat several months ago under the agreement between the two countries.
He said cases of the inmates remained undecided. According to him, the criminal laws of Afghanistan and Iran were different and there were some inmates who should be freed.
Some of the prisoners charged with smuggling of more than hundred kilograms of drugs had spent many years in jail and the Attorney General Office (AGO) should reinvestigate their cases and make decisions accordingly.
Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi confirmed receiving complaints about prisoners’ issue and said the AGO was required to deal with the cases according to the law.
Pajhwok repeatedly tried to contact the AGO office for comment, but failed.
