Trump makes decision on military strategy in Afghanistan

AVA- Trump will make a prime-time address to the nation on Monday night about his strategy for Afghanistan – America’s longest war.

The president will “provide an update on the path forward for America’s engagement in Afghanistan and South Asia,” the White House said in a statement on Sunday.

He’ll make the address at 9 p.m. from Fort Myer in Arlington, Va.

Earlier Sunday, Defense Secretary James Mattis said Trump had reached a decision on the United States’ military strategy for Afghanistan following a “sufficiently rigorous” review process.

“I am very comfortable that the strategic process was sufficiently rigorous and did not go in with a pre-set position,” Mattis said while traveling to Jordan aboard a military aircraft, Reuters reported. “The president has made a decision. As he said, he wants to be the one to announce it to the American people.”

Mattis did not provide details on the strategy or when Trump would make the announcement about America’s longest war.

Trump gathered with his military and national security aides at Camp David, the president’s retreat in the mountains of Maryland, over the weekend to discuss the next step in the 16-year-old war.

“Important day spent at Camp David with our very talented Generals and military leaders. Many decisions made, including on Afghanistan,” the president tweeted on Saturday.

Earlier reports said the options could involve a complete military pullout or an increase of an additional 4,000 to 9,000 troops.

Former President Obama began drawing back the US military presence in Afghanistan in 2014 and about 8,400 US troops remain in the country today.
