AVA’s correspondent in Kholm district, quoting officials from Samangan province, reports that efforts are underway to send aid to earthquake victims and that provincial officials are trying to manage the crises caused by the earthquake.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Mazar-e-Sharif: Maulvi Dadkhoda Khadem, deputy governor of Samangan province, told the media: Around 1 am on Monday, a severe earthquake shook parts of the province and caused huge losses in terms of lives and property.

He added: The mountains around the Tashqarghan Strait, through which the North-Kabul highway passes, collapsed due to the earthquake, killing a number of shopkeepers, pedestrians and drivers. The highest number of lives and property losses have also occurred in this area.

Mawlawi Khadem stated that the shops on the sides of the strait were destroyed and the highway was blocked, but with the efforts of Samangan government agencies and technical teams of the 209th Al-Fatah Corps, the route has been opened for pedestrians and trucks to pass.

He clarified that efforts are underway to send aid to the victims and that Samangan provincial officials are active in managing the crises caused by the earthquake.

The extent of the earthquake damage in Khulm district is not yet known.Seyed Ali Hosseini Mazari, Ava’s correspondent in Tashqarghan Strait and Khulm district, said: “People and shopkeepers inside the strait, pedestrians and drivers were surprised by the earthquake in the middle of the night, which has increased the loss of life and property.”

He added: “A number of residents of Khulm district were martyred and injured when the roofs and walls of their houses collapsed, and some others lost their lives or were seriously injured while crossing or shopping in Tashqarghan Strait.”

Mazari also reported the presence of army forces, medical teams and government rescue agencies in the center and surrounding areas of Kholm district and said: Several trucks have caught fire and been destroyed inside the narrow passage. He emphasized that the extent of the loss of life and property is not yet known and that relief efforts are continuing with the victims.

Meanwhile, a number of injured and affected people told reporters: At 58:58 on Monday morning, the earthquake began with a strong tremor and people did not have enough time to take shelter. They described the earthquake as very terrible.

They added: The government should help and cooperate with the affected people as soon as possible, because with the onset of the cold season, families without facilities will face serious crises.

It is worth noting that local officials in Samangan have not yet announced the exact number of loss of life and property, but based on initial estimates, this event has left hundreds of people martyred and injured and thousands of families affected.
