Tensions between the US and Iran will be resolved through negotiations / Military conflict seems unlikely
Ahead of the start of negotiations between the US and Iranian delegations in Oman, a number of political experts are optimistic about the success of these talks, considering them an effective step towards regional peace and stability, and assessing the possibility of a military conflict as weak.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Aziz Ma’arij, a political expert, stated in an interview with AVA: “In the first step, a military conflict between Iran and the US seems unlikely, because both sides have come to the understanding that war is not in the interest of either of them.”

According to Ma’arij, “Despite the increasing threats and pressure from the US against Iran, we believe that negotiations between the two countries will ultimately reach a conclusion, because global and regional conditions require that a military confrontation that would worsen the situation be avoided.”
He continued: “Despite the differences in views, there is a possibility of reaching an understanding through the mediation of countries like Russia, because both sides are seeking a peaceful solution, not war.”
Ma’arij also emphasized: “The US and Iran are currently using the language of threats, the logic of force, and a show of power to consolidate their positions, which are considered a prerequisite for bargaining in negotiations.”
The political analyst added: “Although Donald Trump has a warmongering face, Congress and other decision-making institutions in the US definitely consider the aspects and consequences of a war. For this reason, tensions will ultimately be managed through diplomacy and dialogue.”
On the other hand, Ma’arij noted: “Iran has no desire to engage in conflict with Western countries. Iran’s relations with Russia are based on political expediency and are not such that in a crisis situation, practical military cooperation between them can take place.”
He added: “Overall, Iran is not a belligerent country and is in a defensive position in most cases. Although it may support some weak regional groups such as Hamas in Palestine or the Houthis in Yemen, it will never jeopardize its national interests.”
Despite this optimism, Ma’arij did not rule out the small possibility of a military conflict and warned: “If, God forbid, a war breaks out, its negative effects on the countries of the region will be very severe.”
According to him, “In the event of a conflict, Iran will target US military centers anywhere in the region. The United States has military bases in countries such as Qatar, the UAE, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and other parts of West Asia that are within range of Iranian missiles. Therefore, the United States knows very well that with the outbreak of war, its interests in the region will be severely jeopardized.”

These statements come less than a day before the start of talks between Iran and the United States in Muscat, the capital of Oman. Political analysts consider these talks to be crucial and decisive for the future of relations between Tehran and Washington and the region.
