Ghani trying to force Dostum into exile in Turkey: report

Afghan Voice Agency(AVA) , 27 Apr 2017 - 12:03

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is reportedly looking to force his first deputy Abdul Rashid Dostum into exile in Turkey.

Afghan Voice Agency(AVA), Citing an unnamed senior Afghan official, the New York Times on Thursday said that Ghani spoke to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan twice about the plan.

A Turkish landed in Kabul to take the general out, but he to leave, the report said.

The plan comes as Dostum is facing allegations that he ordered his men to detain his political rival Ahmad Ishchi, who says he was sexually assaulted while in abduction.

The country’s attorney general has opened a criminal case against Dostum and nine of his bodyguards, but the process has dragged on for months, raising the feeling that the general is unlikely to be prosecuted.

Dostum’s office has rejected the accusations calling them “destructive movement by some unknown circles against the first VP”.

In a major gathering in Dostum’s stronghold in Jowzjan province on Wednesday, his chief of staff Enayatullah Babur Frehmand accused the government of taking fascistic approach.

“We urge the president to put aside removal policies and embrace all ethnic groups in Afghanistan,” said another speaker.
