Ghani urges Test nations to arrange regular series with Afghanistan
As Afghanistan started playing their debut Test match against India in Bangalore on Thursday, President Ashraf Ghani called on other Test cricketing nations to arrange regular series with Afghanistan.
“I’m proud of the men who championed cricket in Afghanistan at the dawn of the century and believed in themselves that one day Afghanistan will play against the best in the world,” Ghani said in a statement.
“Their journey has not been easy, each player has their own inspirational story and together they are a spirited team that unifies the nation. Our cricketing team symbolize the potential that Afghanistan holds where cricket is one example that this proud nation can cement itself as a pillar of progress in the new Asian century,” the statement said.
Calling the day as historic, Ghani paid tribute to Afghan cricket team’s contribution to the game of cricket and honoured them for being a “source of pride” to the nation.
“India, and now Afghanistan are two major Asian cricket forces,” Ghani said in the statement, thanking India for their role in the development of Afghan cricket and for arranging the match.
“This is yet another poignant example of the everlasting friendship between India and Afghanistan,” the statement said.
