Russia says ongoing conflict in Afghanistan is a fratricidal war
Russia has called the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan a ‘fratricidal war’ while hailing the Afghan government for its decision to extend the ceasefire with the Taliban group.
“We welcome the statement by President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani on the extension of the temporary ceasefire announced by the Government of Afghanistan on the occasion of the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan,” the Foreign Ministry of Russia said in a statement.
The statement further added that “It is important that the decision to halt hostilities does not apply to international terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan, primarily ISIS.”
“We express hope that the new initiative of Kabul will give impetus to ending the fratricidal war on the long-suffering Afghan land and will contribute to the beginning of a peaceful dialogue and the process of national reconciliation,” the Foreign Ministry of Russia said.
The National Security Council on Sunday decided to extend the ceasefire with the Taliban group for another ten days.
However, the Taliban in a statement said late on Sunday that the fighters of the group will continue to their attacks on Afghan and foreign forces as well as against the government.
