Protests in north Afghanistan enter fifth day
Anti-government protests in northern Afghanistan entered fifth day on Saturday with protesters insisting on their demand for release of Nizamuddin Qaisari, a commander affiliated with Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum.
Road to key port of Aqina on border with Turkmenistan remained closed for third day, although the ministry of defense refused to acknowledge it.
On Saturday, protesters temporarily blocked key highway linking capital Kabul with Balkh province at Samangan.
In Samangan, protesters hurled stones at portraits of President Ashraf Ghani.
Residents of Balkh and Kunduz also took to the streets demanding release of Qaisari and unconditional return of Dostum.
Qaisari was detained and taken to Kabul after a violent dispute during a security meeting on Monday.
Violent protest in Faryab killed one person and wounded nine others on Wednesday.
