Protestors end IEC Kandahar office siege after talks
The Independent Election Commission (IEC)’s regional office in southern Kandahar province was reopened on Monday as protestors called off their demonstration after assurances.
AVA- Almost ten days back, supporters of the Grand National Alliance closed down the IEC branches in Kandahar, Nangarhar, Herat and Balkh provinces over alleged fraud in the voter registration process.
The protesters were demanding the use of biometric system in the upcoming election and were of the view that they would not reopen the IEC office until their demands were met.
After an understanding reached between the Grand National Alliance representatives and the governor’s office, the IEC office in Kandahar City was reopened today.
Sayed Jan Khakrizwal, the alliance regional leader, told media they reopened the IEC office after their demands were accepted.
He added their demands included increase in the number of observers and using the biometrics. He warned if the government backed out of its assurances, they would resume protesting and would close down the IEC office again.
IEC regional director Nimatullah Wardak told they reached an agreement with the protesters through talks and the IEC office was reopened today.
