US allows Afghanistan to continue to import oil from Iran, use Chabahar port

Afghan Voice Agency(AVA) , 7 Nov 2018 - 16:55

After reimposing sanction on Iran, the United States has allowed Afghanistan to continue to buy oil from Iran and use India-backed Chabahar port in the neighbouring country.

After extensive consideration, US has provided an exception under the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act to allow Afghanistan to continue to import petroleum products from Iran and for shipment of non-sanctionable goods Chabahar Port for Afghanistan,” US ambassador in Kabul, John Bass, said Wednesday.
A US State Department spokesman said that the exception also will permit the construction of a railway line from Chabahar port to Afghanistan.
“These activities are vital for the ongoing support of Afghanistan’s growth and humanitarian relief,” the spokesman was quoted as saying by Reuters.
The exception to US sanctions will allow the development of Chabahar port, which could potentially open way for millions of dollars of trade for land-locked Afghanistan and end its dependence on Pakistan’s port of Karachi.
The sanctions exception granted to the Chabahar project aims to further U.S. ties with Afghanistan and India “as we execute a policy of maximum pressure to change the Iranian regime’s destabilizing policies in the region and beyond,” the State Department spokesman said.
