Iran Launches Most Advanced Indigenous Destroyer
The Iranian Navy has launched its most advanced domestically-built destroyer, named Sahand, in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
AVA- Sahand joined the Iranian naval fleet in the Persian Gulf at a ceremony attended by the top military brass including Iran’s Army Commander, Major general Abdolrahim Mousavi.
The destroyer has been hailed as the most advanced one of its type to be indigenously-produced in the country.
It is bigger in size, of enhanced operational capabilities, and twice stronger in offensive and defensive features compared to Jamaran.
Sahand has been fitted with four engines to support long-distance missions and can stay afloat for 150 days while accompanied by a support vessel. It also has electronic warfare capabilities and has a flight deck for helicopters.
The updates have favored such parts of the vessel as torpedo launchers, anti-aircraft and anti-ship gunnery, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile system, precision defense system, naval defense system, operational sphere, and maneuverability.
Its main structure, which has been rendered capable of radar evasion, was first manufactured in the form of separate modules that were put together in a towing tank.
