German fighting for Taliban gets 6 years in prison

Afghan Voice Agency(AVA) , 11 Dec 2018 - 11:21

A German citizen, who allegedly fought for Taliban in southern Afghanistan, has been sentenced to six years in jail, a media report said on Tuesday.

Thomas K, a Polish-born German who grew up in Rhineland-Palatinate, reportedly spent five years with the Afghan Taliban. He was found criminally liable, though he claimed suffering from mental health problems.
According to Deutsche Welle, the 37-year-old German was convicted by a Düsseldorf court on Monday. He had been captured by US and German special forces in southern Afghanistan in February.
Flown to Germany in April, he was also charged with attempted murder for firing a mortar grenade at an Afghan army camp. But the Düsseldorf High District Court ruled the charge was unfulfilled.
The convict has confessed to travelling to Pakistan in 2012 and fighting with the Taliban for five years. Prosecutors charged him with being a member of Taliban's Red Unit, which specialises in suicide attacks. In the unit, he spied on targets and built bombs.
