US seeks greater Russian, Pakistani role in Afghanistan
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Russia, Pakistan, India and other regional actors to become more involved in the war in Afghanistan.
While opposing a long-term presence of US troops in the conflict-devastated country, he claimed the former Soviet Union had collapsed due to its involvement in Afghanistan in the 1980s.
During the first cabinet meeting in 2019, the US leader said: “You take a look at other countries…Pakistan is there. They should be fighting; Russia should be fighting.”
Different American media outlets quoted Trump as saying that Russia had invaded Afghanistan to prevent terrorists stealing into the former USSR. He defended the Soviet invasion as the right move.
“The problem was it was a tough fight. And they literally went bankrupt. They went to being called Russia again, as opposed to the Soviet Union,” he added.
Countries closer to Afghanistan should take up the fight against the Taliban and Islamic State (IS) insurgents, Trump remarked, asking: “Why are we there and we’re 6,000 miles away?”
However, he stopped short of discussing reports of a possible drawdown in the 14,000 US troops in Afghanistan leading the NATO mission to train and advise local troops.
