Floods kill at least five in west Afghanistan, hundreds of homes damaged
At least five people, including two children, have been killed by flooding in Afghanistan's western provinces, local officials said Wednesday.
AVA- Two of them have been killed in Herat province while the remaining three died in Farah province.
More than 500 homes have been damaged in Herat alone, according to Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority.
In Herat, floods have been reported in Kuhsan, Zindajan, Guzara, Enjil and Karukh districts.
Jelani Farhad, a spokesman for Herat governor, said that heavy rain and snow caused cancellation of flights and closure of highways from the provincial capital to Islam Qala and Torghundi.
Meanwhile, deadly avalanches have been reported in northeast Badakhshan province.
Mohammad Aslam Sayas, deputy of Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, said that a team was tasked to assess financial and human losses from recent floods.
