Afghanistan v Ireland - Preview, Team Squads and Series Predictions

خبرگزاری Afghan Voice Agency(AVA) , 20 Feb 2019 - 4:34

Afghanistan will be hosting Ireland in India for a full-fledged tour which will include three T20Is, five ODIs and one Test. All the matches will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

AVA- The last time both teams met was in Ireland when Afghanistan defeated the hosts by 2-0 in the three match T20 series and by 2-1 in the ODI series. The superstar for Afghanistan was Rashid Khan who boggled the Irish batsmen time and again as they failed to read his variations.
Ireland have not had the best of times recently. They last competed in the quadrangular series held in Oman where they won two and lost one out of their three matches. They started off well by beating Oman by 15 runs but then lost against Scotland by 6 wickets. They managed a narrow victory against the Netherlands by one wicket in the last match.
Although they had some good individual performances, the team would expect a little more consistency from its players. It is good that they are playing another limited over series in a short time which will help them to be match ready and bring out their A game.
Afghanistan's last international tournament was the Asia Cup where they left a big mark on the international cricketing circuit by beating Sri Lanka and Bangladesh by big margins in back to back matches. They then suffered a defeat against Pakistan after which they played a riveting tie against India to leave the tournament with their heads held high and with lots of respect from all quarters.
Ireland would also want to avenge their loss to Afghanistan in the World Cup Qualifiers held last year.
Afghanistan have the likes of Hazratullah Zazai, Usman Ghani and Mohammad Nabi in their batting lineup which are renown international names now and are expected to do well. In the bowling department, they have the quality of spinners Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Zahir Khan who are as good as any around the world. Asghar Afghan will lead the side in all the three formats. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad would be a special attraction.
They are still evolving as a Test side and their disappointing defeat against India in their opening Test would have been a strong blow to their self confidence. The Afghans would like to make amends in their second Test.
Ireland performed relatively well against Pakistan in their maiden Test. They will be led by the experienced William Porterfield in the Test and the ODIs while the dynamic Paul Stirling will marshall the troops in the shortest format of the game. The team has the quality of Andrew Balbirnie and Kevin O'Brien in the batting lineup while Boyd Rankin, Simi Singh and George Dockrell are the standout names among the bowlers.
