Ghani to open new Afghan parliament on Friday

Afghan Voice Agency(AVA) , 24 Apr 2019 - 17:44

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani will inaugurate new parliament on Friday, more than six months after the election, a source told 1TV on Wednesday.

This comes as final results from the vote have yet to be completed.
Six constituencies including Kabul await final results, and they make up more than one-fifth of lower house of the parliament.
Addressing winning candidates in the presidential palace on Tuesday, Ghani said that he was ready to inaugurate the parliament.
He called for completion of final results.
“I want to be a personal friend of every MP,” Ghani said.
He said that the parliament should not become a battleground. He said that consultations would begin on major national issues as soon as the new parliament is inaugurated.
In an apparent reference to calls for interim government before presidential election scheduled for September, Ghani said that anything that would defy the Constitution would be considered as coup.
“This nation won’t accept coup,” he said.
Final results for Kabul, Paktia, Maidan Wardak, Baghlan, Kunduz and Kuchi constituencies have not been announced.
Yosuf Rashid, head of Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan, said that inaugurating parliament without completing final results is illegal.
Meanwhile, some candidates from Kabul called gathered on Wednesday, calling for invalidation of votes from the constituency over alleged massive fraud.
