Noor Claims Loya Jirga Participants Attended After Seeking His Approval
Atta Mohammad Noor the former governor of Balkh and Chief Executive of Jamiat-e Islami party claims that some participants of the Consultative Loya Jirga on Peace have attended at the gathering after seeking his approval.
Noor is among those politicians who have boycotted an ongoing peace Jirga in Kabul, saying it serves personal purposes of President Ashraf Ghani.
Speaking in an interview with Ariana News, Noor said he has an influence on the peace Jirga where more than 3,000 people have attended to discuss peace talks with the Taliban insurgent group.
“They consulted with me either to participate or boycott [the Jirga] and I asked them to participate. Right now, if I wish I can do anything at the Loya Jirga but I will intervene when I see they want to impose something against the will of the people,” Noor said.
Noor is one of the biggest critics of the government and a supporter of “Peace and Moderation” electoral ticket led by Mohammad Hanif Atmar the former National Security Advisor to President Ghani.
In addition, Noor emphasized that based on the country’s constitution, President Ghani’s term will end on 22 May 2019 and said he is consulting with political elites in this regard.
“The Presidential term expires on first of Jawza of the fifth year and there is no need for interpretation by the Supreme Court or others,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of Jamiat said that the party has tolerated Salahuddin Rabbani as the acting head of Jamiat party for a long time.
“He [Rabbani] was appointed as a caretaker for two months but it continued due to some problems but Jamiat is having its leadership members,” Noor said.
Rabbani is currently the Head of Jamiat party and acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan. He has announced his support for Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah’s candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.
