Abdullah Sees No Progress on Afghan Peace Process

Afghan Voice Agency(AVA) , 13 May 2019 - 15:28

Afghanistan’s Chief Executive on Monday said there is no progress on the Afghan peace process because the Taliban insurgent group has an intractable position toward the government.

No practical steps have been taken for peace yet. The main reason is that the Taliban insists on continuation of the war and have a stubborn position,” Abdullah said while speaking at the weekly Council of Ministers meeting.
He added that the Taliban’s refusal to accept the Loya Jirga call for an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan is an example of the group’s willingness to shed more blood and continue the violence.
“The people of Afghanistan expected a ceasefire during the month of Ramadan. Unfortunately, the Taliban did not agree on it and the war is continuing,” he said.
Recently, more than 3,000 people from different walks of society gathered in Kabul where they called on the warring parties to announce a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Taliban insurgent group rejected the proposal and said fighting has more reward in Ramadan.
The militant group has held sixth round of direct talks with the U.S. officials in Qatar so far but it has continuously denied setting with the Afghan government.
