Intra-Afghan peace talks to begin in less than two weeks: Kabul

Afghan Voice Agency(AVA) , 30 Jun 2019 - 18:08

Intra-Afghan peace talks will begin in less than two weeks, Afghanistan's foreign ministry said on Sunday.

Sibghatullah Ahmadi, a spokesman for Afghan Foreign Ministry, said this following Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani’s visit to Germany which is trying to facilitate Afghan talks with Taliban.
Ahmadi said that Germany has guaranteed to facilitate direct negotiations between Afghan government representatives and Taliban.
According to Ahmadi, Germany, Uzbekistan and Indonesia have offered to host intra-Afghan peace meetings.
Taliban began their seventh round of peace talks with the United States on Saturday, but they have so far refused to deal directly with the Afghan government.
Ahmadi said that there will be good news regarding peace talks. He said that human rights including women’s rights and right to free speech would not be traded away in negotiations.
During their seventh round of talks, US and Taliban discussed withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, non-use of Afghanistan territory against the United States or any other country, participation in Afghan-Afghan dialogue and negotiations, and a comprehensive ceasefire, Qatar’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
“In the opening statement, the two sides stressed the importance of ending the suffering of the Afghan people, who long and deserve peace. They also stressed the mutual desire of both sides to move quickly and make tangible progress,” the statement said.
