Dentures got lodged in man’s throat for days after surgery

An elderly British man thought his false teeth somehow fell out of his mouth during stomach surgery — just to find out they were lodged in his throat for eight days.

The unidentified 72-year-old repeatedly returned to doctors after his op, complaining of agonizing pain in his throat, blood in his mouth and shortness of breath, according to a medical report.

Assuming it was routine soreness from having a tube in his throat during surgery, doctors initially prescribed mouthwash, antibiotics and steroids, the British Medical Journal report says.
When the pain intensified, ER doctors noticed “a metallic semicircular object” — with the retired electrician telling them “his dentures had been lost” during surgery eight days earlier, the report states.
Amazing x-ray images clearly show the dentures — a metal roof plate and three false teeth — lodged in his throat.

The dentures were removed in emergency surgery, but the patient — whose original op was to remove a lump in his abdominal wall — had several bouts of severe bleeding over the next six months because of damage to his throat, before making a full recovery, the report says.
The wild case highlights the need to remove false teeth before going under anesthetic, the report states.
“Stay on the safe side. Inform your physician of what’s going on in your mouth,” said BMJ associate editor Dr. Rui Amaral Mendes.
