Unanimity within NATO defense ministers on Afghan mission ‘Impressive’: Ambassador Kay

Speaking to reporters after the conclusion of NATO defense ministers meeting on Afghanistan in Brussels, Ambassador Kay said “Let me say I was really really impressed and struck by the strong unanimity within the defense ministers.” Ambassador Kay further added that they (defense ministers) are absolutely committed to the mission in Afghanistan and there was talk of making sure that the mission there is an enduring mission and that the force posture level is an enduring sustainable mission.
He also added that “I am very struck by everybody repeating that the NATO mission is conditions based.”
The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had earlier said NATO remains committed to Afgahnistan and the alliance would continue to support the Afghan security forces with training and funding. Speaking to reporters after concluding the meeting on Afghanistan, Stoltenberg said NATO’s support helps make the Afghan forces stronger, so they can fight international terrorism and create the conditions for peace.
Stoltenberg further added “We discussed last month’s presidential election. And I welcome that the Afghan forces played a key role in providing security for the vote.”
“All parties should now exercise calm and restraint, as the electoral bodies work to determine the result,” he added.
Furthermore, Stoltenberg said “We also discussed prospects for the peace process in Afghanistan. NATO supported the peace talks earlier this year. And I would welcome them being resumed.” However, he said “But in order to make that possible, the Taliban need to demonstrate real willingness to make real compromises. To reach a credible peace deal.”
