According to Afghanistan's Office of the National Security Council, the freed prisoners were chosen on the basis of their health condition, age and length of remaining sentence as part of efforts for peace and containment of COVID-19.
The Afghan government and the Taliban have been negotiating a prisoners' swap since last week as part of US-Taliban peace deal.
