Taliban says it is not holding missing US citizen Frerichs
Taliban has said that it does not know the whereabouts of Mark R. Frerichs, an American contractor, who went missing in Afghanistan in January.
“We don't have any information about the missing American,” Suhail Shaheen, Taliban's political spokesman, said as quoted by the Associated Press on Sunday.
A second unidentified Taliban official was quoted as saying that formally and informally the Taliban have notified US officials they are not holding Frerichs.
Earlier this week, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad in his meeting with Taliban leaders in Qatar sought progress on "actions necessary to secure the freedom" of the missing US citizen.
During his visit to Islamabad, Khalilzad sought Pakistan's assistance in helping obtain the freedom of Frerichs, according to a statement from the US Embassy in Pakistan on Saturday.
In his meeting with Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Khalilzad also discussed ongoing efforts by the United States to advance the Afghan peace process and sought Pakistan’s support in pressing for a reduction in violence and the immediate start of intra-Afghan negotiations, according to the statement.
