Harsh and Inhumane Conditions of Afghan Refugees in the US and Europe
The modern history of Afghanistan is replete with the sad story of millions of war refugees, especially with the happening of the infamous and maybe fabricated 9/11 event, when the United States launched what came to become the longest US foreign war ever under the pretext of fighting terrorism, which not only brutally ended the lives of countless Afghan citizens and destroyed vital infrastructure in Afghanistan but also produced millions of war refugees from this war-stricken country to any direction.

In pursuit of a better life and to escape from the hell that the United States and other Western countries complicit in the Afghanistan war created for the people of this South-Asian country, millions of Afghan men, women and even unattended children began their journey out of their country without a clear understanding of what may lay ahead of them.

Around %90 of Afghan refugees are currently living in the neighboring countries of Iran and Pakistan and less than %10 in the US and European countries. Surprisingly, however, the most endangered and humiliated population of Afghan refugees is that very %10 living in the US and other Western nations, where it is believed, falsely, of course, to be the cradle of democracy and human rights observance.

Since the beginning of the year, nearly 17,000 Afghans have crossed the Aegean Sea to reach EU shores, the latest data from the EU border agency Frontex show. Around half of them had been living in Iran before attempting the crossing through Turkey into the EU, a senior EU official told Reuters, adding that in many cases Afghan migrants arriving in Europe were born in Iran. They are leaving because “the US policy has significantly deteriorated the economic situation in Iran,” the official said.

But there is no red carpet for the Afghan refugees there in Europe, actually despite Iran and Pakistan, many countries in Europe do not accept Afghans at all since they are not eligible under the EU relocation scheme.

As the Paris Globalist writes, this is due to a process of eligibility that amounts to a vicious cycle: Only asylum seekers from sending countries with a high percentage of refugees already in EU countries are accepted.

Thus, European countries either send Afghans back to Afghanistan, or these refugees remain stranded in countries such as Greece and Croatia. EU border countries, which refuse to accept Afghan asylum seekers, rarely make an effort to deport them safely.

In addition to Europe, thousands of Afghan refugees are currently in the United States. Based on the American Community Survey, it is estimated that almost 10,000 Afghan refugees reside in the U.S. with the largest population residing in northern California, concentrated in Alameda County. Alameda County is the site of ground-breaking studies on Afghan refugees where various health problems and insights into social and cultural stressors associated with being uprooted were uncovered for this population.

The new wave of extreme nationalism in Europe and the US, which is very much dangerous to the peace and security of the world, expose Afghan refugees to a wide variety of physical and mental damage to make their lives in an asylum so unbearable that they will eventually have no other choice but to return to Afghanistan.

Yet these conducts have been promoted in recent years by the warmongering, selfish leaders such as Donald Trump and Boris Johnson, to name a few. This is the leading reason why from the American and the European governments to American and European people view Afghan war refugees as ‘extra burden’ and intend to get rid of them.

In early March, Afghan refugees were stripped of their clothes, documents and money and were forced to go back in their underwear at the border of Greece. The disturbing footage revealed of the incident showed refugees struggling to get warm as they had no clothes on. Refugees shared their horrible experience with the MEE saying they were beaten by Europeans, the ones who have always claimed that they respect human rights.
