COVID-19 Cases Mark Record Surge In India As Tally Crosses 0.5M
India raced past the half a million mark and recorded 18,552 cases in the last 24 hours, its highest single day surge of fresh Coronavirus infections on Saturday.
The Health Ministry reported 384 more fatalities as the death toll touched 15,700.
The recovery rate has gone about 58% with around 295,881 patients recovered to date.
The country took 110 days to record 100,000 cases but just 39 days from then to reach 508,953.
On Friday, Delhi recorded 3,390 cases in the biggest single-day increase, taking lead over the worst-hit financial capital city of Mumbai.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal attributes the spike to the four-fold increase in testing in the capital.
However, Delhi and its suburban areas are planning to re-open malls and shopping complexes next week.
Some states have extended their lockdowns till July 31 to better manage their active cases.
