Afghan government says it won
Afghan government said on Sunday it will not release 597 prisoners that are included in Taliban's list of 5,000 prisoners they are demanding.
The Office of Prisons Administration said that most of those prisoners are convicted of criminal offenses and moral crimes, including murder.
The Afghan government has so far released around 4,000 Taliban prisoners following an agreement between the United States and Taliban signed in February.
The deal expects the Afghan government to free up to 5,000 prisoners and the Taliban to free 1,000 as confidence building measure ahead of intra-Afghan peace talks.
The Taliban has so far released 616 prisoners, of which 408 are security forces, according to the National Security Council.
Sediq Sediqi, an Afghan presidential spokesman, said on Sunday that the government is committed to start negotiations, but complete release of security forces by the Taliban is important.
Syed Akbar Agha, a former Taliban commander, said that the group insists on complete release of their prisoners before intra-Afghan talks.
