150 Herat Students Test Positive for COVID-19 in Past Week
Over 150 students tested positive for COVID-19 in Herat over the past week, the Herat Health Department said on Tuesday as classes remain packed with students who are not following the necessary health guidelines.
Over 40 percent of suspicious cases of COVID-19 among students in Herat have been positive, said the officials.

35 to 60 students learn in a single room due to a lack of facililities and the failure to heed social distancing guidelines, the official said.

“Over the past 7 days, we collected 386 samples from schools in Herat. Among the infected students and teachers we found 156 positive cases,” said Abdul Hakim Tamanna, the head of the Herat Health Department.

Meanwhile, a number of students in Herat have called on the government to take new measures to help protect the students from contracting the virus during their studies.

TOLOnews’ correspondent Naseer Ahmad Salehi reports from Gawhar Shad school in Herat that 35 students are learning in a small class.

“There are lots of concerns in every class, the government needs to take serious measures to protect schools from the virus, and the education department needs to help secure them from the coronavirus,” said Elham, a student in Herat.

“Our school building has no capacity, we are teaching in three shifts, if we reduce the numbers of students, then we do not have the space or personnel to teach the students,” said Latifa Hamdard, school principle for Gawhar Shad School.

According to Herat's health department, over the past one week, 300 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Herat and the majority of the victims are teachers and students.

There are concerns that the infected students will also put their families at risk.
