According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defense, the Minister visited Helmand to assess the situation in the province and meet with local officials.
Clashes between Afghan security forces and the Taliban have been raging in Helmand province since Sunday, with both sides saying they had inflicted heavy casualties on each other.
Meanwhile, sources in Baghlan province say 16 security forces were killed in clashes with the Taliban and more than 10 others were wounded.
According to these sources, the clashes started when Taliban fighters attacked security checkpoints in the Gozargah-e-Noor district of Baghlan province.
Clashes are reported to be ongoing near the Baghlan police headquarters.
