Afghanistan ranks 99th among 107 countries in 2020 Global Hunger Index

Afghanistan was 108th among 117 countries in the index’s 2019 edition.
The data shows that Afghanistan’s score has decreased to 30.3 in 2020 from 51 in 2000, a positive sign in this ranking, but the country continues to be in the “serious” hunger category. Last year, Afghanistan’s score was 33.8.
The index combines three indicators – the proportion of the population that is undernourished, the proportion of young children who are underweight and the mortality rate for under-fives.
The report said 29.9 percent of of Afghanistan’s population was undernourished and the country registered a 38.2 percent stunting rate among children under five and a wasting rate of 5.1 percent.
In general, the Global Hunger Index shows that “global level of hunger and undernutrition is at a moderate level.”
“It has fallen from a GHI score of 29.0 points in 2000 to 18.2 points in 2020. While this is encouraging, hunger persists in many countries, and in some instances, progress is even being reversed,” the report said.
