At least 21 Afghan government officials are due to face justice on corruption charges, after their cases are introduced to the court for further investigation.

The current governor of Herat, Abdul Wahid Qatali; the director of Public Health, Abdul Hakim Tamana; three members of the provincial council, Wakil Ahmad Karukhel, Najibullah Mohibi, and Ghulam Habib Hashimi; and several others are introduced to the court by the special prosecutor’s office.
They are accused of embezzling money from Afghanistan’s fight against the COVID-19 project and have been referred to the court for committing serious corruptions.
A spokesman for the attorney general’s office, Jamshid Rasuli, said they were accused of embezzling AFN20 million from the coronavirus’s project budget, and that the special prosecutor’s office had asked the court to sentence the convicts following full completion of the investigation.
Earlier, the Presidential Palace’s investigative agency said it had referred 44 former and current officials to the Attorney General’s Office for alleged involvement in corruption and embezzlement of funds in the fight against Coronavirus projects.
