18 Jun 2022 - 14:57

The South Korean prime minister has announced that Seoul intends to develop nuclear energy.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA), South Korean Prime Minister Han Dak-soo said that Seoul will actively use nuclear energy as a tool for the country's energy security.

"South Korea will actively use nuclear power plants to reduce carbon emissions," the South Korean prime minister told a forum of major energy and climate economies, according to a statement from Hahn's office.

South Korea has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030 from 2018 levels and reach carbon neutral by 2050.

South Korea will design a plan to properly combine nuclear energy and renewable energy to achieve carbon neutrality, Hahn said.

In addition, he said, South Korea will expand its investment in small nuclear power projects called small modular reactors (SMRs) and renewables, and by 2030, South Korea will supply more than 4.5 million pollution-free vehicles.

Last year, South Korea signed a global pact to reduce methane by 30 percent by 2030.
Wind and solar energy investments in the Asia-Pacific region are highest in countries such as China, Japan, India, South Korea and Taiwan.

As the eighth largest consumer of energy in the world, South Korea is working to change its fossil fuel-based energy model to a 20% increase in the share of renewable energy by 2030.

South Korea recently unveiled a project worth 48.5 trillion won ($ 43.2 billion) to build the world's largest offshore wind farm by 2030.
