The United Nations has called on Turkey to help those affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan

23 Jun 2022 - 11:26

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan has called on Turkey to provide relief to those affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan, noting that the UAE forces do not have sufficient resources to resolve the crisis.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Ramz Al-Akbarov, the UN Under-Representative for Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan, has stressed that the UAE forces do not have the necessary equipment for rescue operations and urgent foreign assistance is needed.

"We spoke to the Turkish embassy here and they are waiting for our official request. Of course, we can ask Turkey for help after discussing with the actual [Islamic Emirate] officials and assessing the situation," he said.

The Turkish government has previously announced that the Turkish Red Crescent is ready to help earthquake victims in southeastern Afghanistan.

Islamic Emirate officials say at least 1,000 people have been killed and 1,500 injured in the quake, according to preliminary figures.

Al-Kabroff said the UAE government had not formally requested international assistance from international rescue teams, but called on countries in the region to use their resources to rescue people from the rubble in the southeast.

"Our teams do not have the equipment to get people out from under the rubble. Therefore, we have to rely on the [Islamic Emirate] authorities, who also have their limitations," he said.

The UN special envoy added that it was not clear what the Islamic Emirate would have to do to successfully conduct earthquake rescue operations in mountainous areas.

According to Al-Kabrov, the United Nations has sent 10 tons of medical supplies and 20 medical teams to the quake-hit areas, and at least $ 15 million is needed to address the situation.
