Europe allocated 40 million euros to support Afghan children

3 Jul 2022 - 11:40

The European Union announced the allocation of two aid packages worth a total of 40 million euros to support Afghan children. These donations are used in the polio vaccination and support for working children.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA), this budget is to be provided to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization.

UNICEF has said that the European Union will allocate 25 million euros for polio vaccination and 15 million euros to support children in Afghanistan.

The organization said that as Afghanistan's economic situation worsens, children across the country face violence and other threats to their safety.

Many children and youth feel forced to work, UNICEF added, and some choose to travel dangerously outside of Afghanistan.

According to UNICEF, last year 88% of households had at least one child working outside the home under difficult conditions.

Van Brandt, the ambassador of the European Union in Afghanistan, has called children's travel dangerous and said that migrant children are at risk of violence, exploitation and abuse.

He added that this is why the European Union is contributing 15 million euros to UNICEF to help identify boys and girls who need help and children who are at risk of migrating or returning to Afghanistan.

In addition, the European Union is contributing €25 million to UNICEF and the World Health Organization to support polio vaccination campaigns across the country, particularly at borders where children may travel.

The funding will allow UNICEF and the World Health Organization to strengthen polio vaccination efforts and ensure that all children in the country and those passing through checkpoints are vaccinated against polio, said Mohammad Ayuwa, UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan.
