Previously, only residents of the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as residents of the southern regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, large parts of which are controlled by Russia, were eligible for fast-track citizenship.
Since 2019, when the method was first introduced for residents of Donetsk and Luhansk, until this year, more than 720,000 residents of the separatist-controlled areas - about 18 percent of the population - have received Russian passports.
