Russia fined Google $373 million

19 Jul 2022 - 11:18

Russia's communications regulator Raskamenadzer has fined Google 21.1 billion rubles ($373 million) for repeatedly failing to remove illegal content.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA), Moscow has objected to the publication of illegal content on this foreign technology platform for a long time. But it seems that since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the differences between the government and the platform have intensified.

This is while YouTube seems to be the main target of the Russian government. Unlike Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, the mentioned social network is not yet blocked in this country.

Russia's communications regulator Raskamenadzer announced that the Tagansky District Court fined Google 21.1 billion rubles because the company repeatedly failed to limit prohibited content. The court also specifically criticized YouTube.

This court claims that YouTube did not remove fake news in this regard during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and also allowed content promoting extremist views and inviting children to participate in illegal protests to remain on its platform.

The said fine is based on a part of Google's annual income in Russia. Last year, Google was fined 7.2 billion rubles in this country.

On the other hand, Google's bank account in Russia has been stopped, and as a result, this unit has declared bankruptcy.
