Afghanistan's extraordinary opportunity to end polio / Last year, only one case of this disease was registered in the country

17 Aug 2022 - 9:21

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations has said that polio has reached its lowest level in Afghanistan with only one case recorded last year.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) published a report Yesterday, Tuesday (August 16) saying that the number of positive polio cases in Afghanistan has decreased to one for the first time.

OCHA has announced that polio in Afghanistan has reached its lowest level in history in 2022.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs also said that there were four positive cases of polio in 2021 and 56 in 2020.

OCHA added that the resumption of the nationwide polio vaccination campaign to cover 9.9 million children this year is a vital step in the fight against this deadly disease and that Afghanistan has a great opportunity to end polio.

Based on OCHA information, the investigation of the 16-member team of the polio surveillance system in 25 provinces of Afghanistan has shown that the probability of transmission of the undetected polio virus is very low.

This United Nations body has added that it has achieved achievements this year by reaching all parts of Afghanistan to implement the polio eradication campaign, but at the same time warned that there is still a risk of resurgence of the virus.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs added that this achievement was achieved at the expense of the lives of eight polio workers, including four female workers, who were killed in an attack in February this year.

OCHA has announced that Afghanistan is approaching the eradication of polio, while last week this organization warned of the spread of new diseases such as cholera, measles, dengue and Congo this year in the country.
