United Nations: Allow Afghan refugees to reach their original destinations

25 Nov 2022 - 13:16

Recently, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has asked the countries of the region and the world to allow all those who fled Afghanistan to reach their original destination and enjoy their legal right to asylum.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Peterkisler, the spokesperson of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, says that governments have the right to control their borders and prevent legal movement, but these things are done in accordance with national and international laws.

Mr. Kisler said: "According to the published reports of human rights violations in Afghanistan, those Afghans who want to get out of Afghanistan need international support and protection the most, among others, women, girls, Employees of the former government, employees of global offices, religious activists and minorities are included.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees asks the international community not to leave Afghans alone and donor countries should continue their efforts to solve humanitarian concerns.

According to him, currently, nearly 5 million Afghans are immigrants in the countries of the region and the world.

Kisler added: "The international community cannot ignore the people of Afghanistan. Donors must remain committed to highlighting human rights concerns, addressing humanitarian needs and building hope. So far in 2022, the UN's humanitarian appeal for $4.4 billion Only 54% is covered, which has led to severe gaps in the activities of many aid agencies. We are very concerned that in 2023, the Afghan people will face a worsening internal situation in Afghanistan due to increased food and fuel costs during the war in Ukraine and Lack of trust in business will experience more problems."

According to him, in addition to this, currently, 3 to 4 million Afghans are living as internally displaced people.

According to the statistics of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, since the beginning of January 2022, 34,600 Afghans have gone to Iran and Pakistan with visas and registered with UNHCR there.

According to the statistics of the governments of Pakistan and Iran, about one million and 250 thousand Afghans have gone to these countries since the beginning of 2021.

But Peter Kiesler says, there may be many times more Afghans who have been smuggled across the border and need international support.

Meanwhile, unemployment and poverty in Afghanistan have increased more than in the past and the coming of a harsh winter has worried the poor people of this country more than ever.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has also expressed concern that due to the deterioration of the situation in Afghanistan and the increase in oil and food prices due to the war in Ukraine, Afghans will face more problems in the coming year.

The United Nations requested $4.4 billion from international donors to control the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan in 2022, but according to reports, only 45% of this request has been met, which has hampered the work of relief organizations.
