UNAMA: 85% of the world's opium is produced in Afghanistan

7 Dec 2022 - 10:07

The UNAMA office in Kabul says that Afghanistan produces 85% of the world's opium.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The Office of the United Nations Deputy Mission in Afghanistan "UNAMA" wrote in a tweet that 85% of the world's opium is still produced in Afghanistan and they have shared this concern with the officials of the Taliban's Ministry of Interior.

Recently, "Rosa Atunbaeva", the representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Afghanistan, in a meeting with the Minister of Anti-Narcotics of the Ministry of Interior of the Islamic Emirate, at the same time as being concerned about the continuation of opium production in Afghanistan, spoke about the preparation of alternative crops and the economic problems of farmers.

Although two weeks have passed since the beginning of the new poppy cultivation season in the tropical regions of Afghanistan, the farmers have not been helped and alternative crops have not been provided to them.

According to the results of a United Nations survey that was published in the middle of the month of Scorpio this year, the income of opium production in Afghanistan has increased from four hundred million dollars in previous years to more than one billion dollars this year.

This survey was organized using satellite and estimated findings and covers from the month of Scorpio in the year 1400 to the month of Cancer in the year 1401, but the United Nations has not published new figures related to poppy cultivation.

According to the report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, during this period, poppy was planted on 233,000 hectares of land in Afghanistan, and 6,200 tons of opium were obtained from it.

Seven months ago, a decree attributed to Mullah Hebatullah, the leader of the Islamic Emirate, was published on the basis of which poppy cultivation in Afghanistan was banned.
