The export and import of goods through Torghundi railway has increased

5 Feb 2023 - 14:43

After the closure of the Hairatan-Mazar-e-Sharif railway by Uzbekistan, the import and export of Afghanistan's commercial goods has increased through the Torghundi railway.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Based on the statistics of the Afghanistan Railway Administration, fifty wagons of foodstuffs have entered the country through this route in the last twenty-four hours.

Abdul Sami Durrani, the spokesperson of the Railway Department, told Tolo News: Yesterday, 50 wagons were imported into the country through Torghundi port, which contains a total of 3,360 metric tons, and a large part of it is food. In the same way, seven wagons of Afghanistan's commercial goods were exported from this route yesterday.

However, the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment says that traders import and export with Central Asian countries and Russia through four ports, and this trend is still active in the transit sector.

Mohammad Yunus Momind, the head of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, said: Customs problems that existed now do not exist, both Central Asia can transit to South Asia and South Asian countries can carry on their transit trade without any direct problems.

Abdul Ghani Ahadi, a merchant, said: There are problems in the loading and unloading section, we request that these problems be resolved, and in the stopping section of the wagons, traders should be exempted from three to seven days.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan and Russia have discussed a new solution based on which the amount of goods transported through Afghanistan to South Asian countries will increase.

In the newsletter of the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan, it is stated: The parties exchanged views on the capacity of the multimodal transport and transit corridor Russia-Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan, which connects Russia with Southeast and South Asia.

Recently, Uzbekistan has stopped the transportation of commercial goods through the Hairatan railway for unknown reasons.

The Railway Department says that this week a delegation from the Islamic Emirate will go to Uzbekistan for the purpose of resuming the operation of the Hairatan-Mazar Sharif railway, and a memorandum of understanding between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan will be signed.
