Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The opposition parties to the South Korean government have urgently prepared a bill to impeach President Yoon Seok-yol in parliament following his declaration of martial law last night (Tuesday night).
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Democratic Party, the main opposition party, and five other parties, including the "Reconstruction" Party and the "Reform" Party, submitted the bill to the parliamentary bill office at 2:43 p.m. today (local time).
According to the report, more than 80 percent of South Korean lawmakers supported the initial bill. The impeachment bill was signed by 190 opposition lawmakers and one independent lawmaker, while none of the ruling People Power Party's representatives supported it.
The National Assembly has 300 seats, with the People Power Party holding 108 seats, the Democratic Party, the opposition Party holding 170 seats, and the two Reconstruction and Reform parties holding 12 and three seats, respectively.
The report said that the opposition parties plan to introduce the bill in a plenary session on Thursday and put it to a vote on Friday or Saturday; by law, the impeachment bill must be put to a vote in a plenary session of the House within 24 to 72 hours of its report.
Yonhap added: The impeachment bill of the South Korean president needs a two-thirds vote of the 300-member National Assembly to pass in the House. The opposition parties need another eight votes from the ruling People Power Party to pass the bill.
Yonhap also reported on the increasing pressure on the South Korean president: Workers of the South Korean Metal Workers' Union announced that they will hold a major strike on December 11 if Yoon does not step down.
Meanwhile, South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun announced today (Wednesday) that he had submitted his resignation to the South Korean president, apologizing to the people of his country.
Yonhap News Agency reported that the South Korean Defense Minister was apparently one of the key influencers behind South Korean President Yoon Suk-yol's decision yesterday (Tuesday) to impose martial law in South Korea.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yol declared martial law on Tuesday afternoon, accusing the country's opposition in parliament of collaborating with North Korea and engaging in anti-government activities.
The South Korean parliament voted 190 votes in favor of lifting martial law in a plenary session on Tuesday night, after which the South Korean president announced that martial law would be lifted in the country following parliamentary approval.
