Latest Ukraine developments/Trump: Ceasefire must be established immediately
US President-elect Donald Trump announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is willing to make a “deal” with Russia. He warned again that a ceasefire must be established immediately, otherwise the Ukrainian crisis could escalate.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social on Monday: “A ceasefire must be established immediately and negotiations must begin.” Donald Trump also believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin should take action for negotiations on Ukraine. He wrote: “I know Vladimir Putin well. Now is his time to act. China can also help. The world is waiting!”
Yesterday, the West expressed hope that the trilateral meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, held at the Elysee Palace, would pave the way for further steps on Ukraine after Trump's inauguration in January.
The New York Times reported that the trilateral meeting between Trump, Zelensky and Macron in Paris was an opportunity to prepare for further steps on resolving the Ukrainian crisis. The meeting showed that Kiev was ready to make concessions in the negotiations. According to the publication, Zelensky tried to convey his position on the conflict to the US president-elect. The meeting lasted about 20 minutes and ended without an official statement.
In early December, it became known that the Trump team had three plans for resolving the Ukrainian crisis. These plans include a plan by Keith Kellogg, the US special envoy for Ukraine, a plan by Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, and another by Richard Grenell, the former director of national intelligence in the Trump administration.
According to Tasnim, the last round of Russian-Ukrainian talks took place in Istanbul on March 29, 2022. The talks lasted about three hours. After that, Kiev officially refused to continue contacts with Moscow.
Meanwhile, US President-elect Donald Trump announced that after the change of government in the United States, Washington will probably reduce the volume of its military aid to Ukraine. He stated this last night in an interview with NBC News.
Trump emphasized that he is actively trying to end the conflict in Ukraine. He added that after his inauguration, Kiev should not expect to receive military aid at the current level.
Earlier, on December 5, it was reported that the US Congress had rejected Joe Biden’s request for funding for Ukraine. US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson stressed that the decision on additional financial assistance to Ukraine should be made by President-elect Donald Trump, and not by the current president, who is leaving the White House.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the casualties of the Ukrainian armed forces were significantly higher than the figures announced by US President-elect Donald Trump.
Earlier that day, Trump reported on the Truth Social social network about the “senseless casualties” of 400,000 military personnel in Ukraine. Peskov, in response, noted that Moscow “carefully paid attention to the statements of the future US president.”
He added: “It is absolutely clear that [these data] are based on the narrative of the Ukrainian side and reflect the official positions of Kiev. The real figures of casualties are completely different.”
The Russian presidential press secretary added that the losses of the Ukrainian armed forces are significantly higher than those of the Russians. Peskov warned that continuing this trend will lead to the depletion of the Ukrainian army, a lowering of the age of conscription and an intensification of mobilization, but this will not change the general situation known to Ukraine and the international community.
The Kremlin spokesman also responded to Donald Trump’s words about Kiev’s willingness to “make a deal with Moscow,” stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed that Russia is ready for negotiations on Ukraine and welcomes proposals from China, India, Brazil and other countries.
“Our position on Ukraine is well known. The conditions for an immediate cessation of hostilities were announced by President Putin in his speech at the Russian Foreign Ministry in June of this year. Here it should be recalled that it was Ukraine that refused and continues to refuse negotiations.”
He added that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has banned communication with Russian leaders, thus eliminating the possibility of peace talks. According to him, in order to resume negotiations, it is enough for Zelensky to lift this ban and return to dialogue based on the Istanbul agreements.
