Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Kamel Saqr, the former director of the Syrian presidential media office, claimed that Russia did not respond to Bashar Assad's request after the fall of Aleppo to transfer Iranian military aid to the Syrian army through the Hmeimim airbase.
According to Rossiya Al Youm, during a podcast on the "Mazij" platform, he stated that Bashar Assad had not been able to contact Russian President Vladimir Putin since 3 days before December 8 (the day Damascus fell).
He further added that the Iranians had informed Bashar Assad that they had not received a guarantee that Iranian planes would be transferred to the Hmeimim airbase and pass through the airspace of Iraq and Syria. Moscow also did not respond to the Assad government's request to use the Hmeimim airbase to receive Iranian aid.
Saqr stated that the Iranians informed Assad that the Americans threatened to shoot down the plane that left Iran and entered Iraqi airspace towards Hmeimim, so the plane was forced to return.
The director of Assad’s media office added that the military situation in Syria was bad before the fall of Aleppo and did not allow his forces to engage in war and conflict, in addition to the economic situation in Syria was also dire.
Saqr then said that the Iraqi side informed the Syrians on December 6 that Turkey rejects any talks with Assad under the current circumstances.
He added that Alexander Lavrentiev, the Russian presidential envoy to Syria, tried to convince Assad to talk to Erdogan, but he refused and also refused to hold a meeting at the level of foreign ministers of the country, allowing only meetings between security officials from the two countries.
Saqr continued that Assad’s rejection of this Russian request caused Moscow’s displeasure.
The director of the former Syrian president's media office added that Bashar al-Assad's last trip to Russia before the fall of Damascus was fruitless and he was unable to establish contact with Putin.
